Home-Hospital Instruction (HHI)
Overview:
The purpose of Home-Hospital Instruction (HHI) is to help students maintain continuity of instruction during a temporary, short-term disability of no less than 20 days which, according to a medical professional, makes attendance in regular school or an alternative education program impossible or inadvisable (Education Code 58206.3[b][2]).

Eligibility:
- Must be an RBUSD student enrolled in grade K-12.
- Has an anticipated absence of 20 school days or more from regular school due to a temporary disability.
- A licensed medical professional verifies in writing the student’s diagnosis and need for HHI services.
Referral Process:
- Parents have their medical professional complete the HHI REFERRAL FORM and submit it to their counselor at their school site.
- Counselor reviews the referral and submits it to the office of Educational Services (for students with no IEP) or the office of Special Education (for students with an IEP) for RBUSD.
- The Executive Director of Student Services (EDSS) receives the referral for students with no IEP and determines eligibility.
- The Director of Special Education (DSE) receives the referral for students with an IEP and determines eligibility through the IEP process.
- If a student meets eligibility, the EDSS or the DSE will inform the parent/guardian and attempt to hire an HHI Teacher to provide services for no longer than 30 school days.
- Continuation of HHI services beyond the first approved 30 school days is always subject to review and requires re-verification from the medical professional with the completion of a NEW HHI Referral Form.
- No student is allowed to be on the HHI program for more than 60 school days.
Service Limitations:
- All services must be in person. Online services are not allowed.
- A parent/guardian or other RBUSD approved adult must be in attendance during all sessions.
- Students receive only 1 hour of support per 1 school day missed. A maximum of 5 hours per week. If a school week has only 4 school days in it, only 4 hours of support can be provided.
- Student may NOT attend school or any school sponsored events while on HHI.
