Middle School Math Pathways
The California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CA CCSS-M) ensures all students are ready for success after high school by establishing clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do from kindergarten through 12th grade. The standards outline the knowledge, skills, and behavioral expectations that are necessary for students to be college and career ready upon high school graduation, with each grade-level’s standards building upon the previous grade-level.
Redondo Beach Unified School District has created opportunities for placement into accelerated courses at specific “opportunity points” within the standard course pathway. Decisions to accelerate students into the Common Core State Standards for higher mathematics before ninth grade should not be rushed. Premature placement of students into an accelerated pathway should be avoided at all costs. In order to ensure that students are developmentally ready for accelerated content, it is not recommended to compact the standards before grade seven (California Department of Education (CDE).
