California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

In the spring of each school year, students in Grades 3-8 and 11 complete the online assessments known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) exams in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). Students in Grades 5, 8, and 11 also complete the California Science Test (CAST)

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the California Department of Education (CDE) will be using new reporting achievement level descriptors with the purpose of helping students, their families, and the public better understand student performance on the CAASPP English language arts, mathematics, and science assessments. The table below outlines the changes to the labels for each level.

Level Old Reporting Label New Reporting Label
4 Standard Exceeded Advanced
3 Standard Met Proficient
