Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), implemented at 34 C.F.R. § 106 et seq., provides that no person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, or other education program or activity operated by an entity, including a K-12 school district, that receives federal financial assistance. Sex discrimination includes discrimination based on sex stereotypes; sex characteristics; pregnancy or related conditions; parental, family or marital status; sexual orientation, and/or gender identity. (34 C.F.R. §§ 106.10; 106.20.)

Statement of Nondiscrimination:

In compliance with Title IX, the Redondo Beach Unified School District prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity that it operates, including but not limited to student programs and/or activities and employment.

Examples of Sex-Based Harassment and Discrimination
Examples of types of conduct which are prohibited in the district and which may constitute sex-based harassment under state and/or federal law, in accordance with the definitions above, include, but are not limited to:
  1. Unwelcome leering, sexual flirtations, or propositions
  2. Unwelcome sex-based slurs, epithets, threats, verbal abuse, derogatory comments, or sexually degrading descriptions
  3. Graphic verbal comments about an individual's body or overly personal conversation
  4. Sex-based jokes, derogatory posters, notes, stories, cartoons, drawings, pictures, obscene gestures, or computer-generated images of a sexual nature
  5. Spreading sex-based rumors
  6. Teasing or sexual remarks about students enrolled in a predominantly single-sex class
  7. Massaging, grabbing, fondling, stroking, or brushing the body
  8. Touching an individual's body or clothes in a sexual way
  9. Impeding or blocking movements or any physical interference with school activities when directed at an individual on the basis of sex
  10. Displaying sexually suggestive objects
  11. Sexual assault, sexual battery, or sexual coercion
  12. Electronic communications containing comments, words, or images described above   
Your Student and Employee Rights
  • You have the right to fair and equitable treatment and you shall not be discriminated against based on your sex.
  • You have the right to be provided with an equitable opportunity to participate in all academic extracurricular activities, including athletics.
  • You have the right to have access to a sex/gender equity coordinator, referred to as the Title IX Coordinator (find contact information below), to answer questions regarding sex/gender equity laws.
  • You have the right to contact the State Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation to access information on sex/gender equity laws.
  • You have the right to file a confidential discrimination complaint with the United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights or the California Department of Education if you believe you have been discriminated against or if you believe you have received unequal treatment on the basis of your sex.
  • You have the right to pursue civil remedies if you have been discriminated against.
  • You have the right to be protected against retaliation if you file a discrimination complaint.

All students have the right to participate fully in their educational programs & activities, free from discrimination, harassment, and bullying.
 
Any student who feels they are being or has been subjected to sexual harassment, including: unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and/or other verbal/physical conduct of a sexual nature should contact their principal, administrator, teacher, any school employee.

Title IX Annual Training

Redondo Beach Unified Title IX Coordinator

Inquiries about Title IX may be referred to the District’s Title IX Coordinator, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, or both. All complaints of unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying are investigated promptly.
