School of Choice

The School of Choice policy provides the opportunity for parents who reside within the school district’s attendance boundaries to request enrollment for their student in any school within the district on a space-available basis.

Each school serves the students who live within its attendance area prior to accepting any students from outside its attendance area boundary.

Though the district supports parental choice, once enrollment reaches capacity at a school and/or grade level, waiting lists will be created through a lottery process. Should an opening then become available at a later date, parents will be notified. Once the school year begins in the fall, students on waiting lists will not be transferred out of their home school in order to attend another school.

Applications must be received in February
After submitting your required documentation to the school site, the office staff will verify your enrollment is complete. Additional requests pertaining to enrollment are listed below. Links to forms will be available at your neighborhood school upon confirmation of your enrollment within the RBUSD. Note: all students must complete registration at their neighborhood school prior to requesting applications for Transitional Kindergarten, School of Choice, and the Washington Dual Immersion Program

  • School of Choice: The purpose of School Of Choice (SOC) is to request enrollment at a school site other than your assigned neighborhood school. Request the application from your neighborhood school office after you complete enrollment and submit through the online platform to the District office by February 27, 2026.  If needed, a lottery for School of Choice will be held on March 18, 2026. For more information on the School of Choice process – click here.

  • Washington Dual Immersion Program: Enrollment to the Dual Immersion Program (DI) is only open to incoming Kinder students. This program is housed at Washington Elementary School. Families residing in Redondo Beach should request a Dual Immersion application from your neighborhood school after you complete enrollment. Applications must be submitted to Educational Services by February 27, 2026. If needed, a lottery for the Washington Spanish Dual Immersion Program will be held on March 16, 2026. If your child's name is in the lottery, you will receive notification of the lottery details in advance. SCHOOL OF CHOICE and DUAL IMMERSION PROCESS FOR RBUSD FAMILIES

If a parent desires permanent status at a school in the Redondo Beach Unified School District which is different than the assigned neighborhood school, OR a student is currently attending a school on an Intra-District Permit (Redondo Beach resident), OR you wish to apply for the Dual Immersion Program, the following steps must be taken:

  1. Please note that the School of Choice/Dual Immersion window opens Feruary 2, 2026 and closes on February 27, 2026 for the 2026-2027 school year.
  2. After completing registration, request from your neighborhood/home school office the application for either School of Choice or Dual Immersion. (Dual Immersion is a School of Choice Program so you may request either School of Choice or Dual Immersion. You may not request both within the same application period.) The school site will initiate the form and a link will be provided to the parent/guardian to complete the applciation via the online platform. No paper copies will be accepted. Form must be submitted by Februray 27, 2026.
  3. One completed form is required for EACH student and only one school site other than the neighborhood/home school site may be requested per year.
  4. Requests are NOT kept according to the date they are received and are NOT reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  5. Names are drawn from a school-level and grade-level lottery in March (if needed). You will be notified of the lottery date and other pertinent information prior to the event.
  6. The number of students selected in the lottery will be determined by the amount of space available at each school/program/grade level.
  7. After available spaces are filled, a waiting list will be created by drawing the remaining lottery names.
  8. If space becomes available at the school in that grade level, students will be offered an opportunity to enroll. However, once the school year begins, students will not be transferred from their home schools.
  9. Once a student is accepted at the school of choice location during open enrollment, that school will become the student’s permanent home school (unless a move out of the RBUSD attendance boundaries occurs).

Dual Immersion is a School of Choice Program. Should you have any questions about the School of Choice process, please feel free to contact the Educational Services Office at (310) 937-1223.
