Safe Routes to Schools

The City of Redondo Beach is implementing updates to the School Crossing Guard Program beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. These changes are the result of several months of evaluation by the City's School Crossing Guard Subcommittee, which reviewed school traffic patterns, safety data, staffing challenges, and community feedback. The goal is to create a crossing guard program that is:

Equitably staffed throughout the city
Sustainable for the future

Updated Crossing Guard Locations

The following intersections will have staffed crossing guards for the 2026–2027 school year:

Why and What Changes Being Made?

Like many communities, the City of Redondo Beach continues to experience significant staffing challenges within its Crossing Guard Program, including:

Difficulty recruiting and retaining crossing guards
Staff absences that create inconsistent coverage
Limited resources that require prioritizing locations with the greatest demonstrated need

To address these challenges, the City evaluated every crossing guard location using traffic and pedestrian safety data, school travel patterns, and operational needs.

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year:

Crossing guards will be assigned to locations identified through the City's safety evaluation. (See Photo's Above)
Some crossing guard locations have been relocated or removed.
The City will continue to monitor traffic conditions and make adjustments as needed.

Traffic & Other Safety Improvements

At locations where crossing guard assignments have changed, the City has evaluated and will implement appropriate traffic safety improvements such as:

Improved visibility
Updated signage
Traffic calming measures
Additional engineering improvements where appropriate

Many of these improvements will be completed before school begins, with additional work continuing into the early part of the school year. The City will continue monitoring these locations and evaluating the effectiveness of these improvements.

The City and RBUSD recognize that student safety depends on much more than crossing guards alone. Several additional measures are being implemented.

Increased Police Presence

The Redondo Beach Police Department (RBPD) will:

Increase traffic enforcement around school zones
Focus enforcement at high-risk intersections
Address unsafe driving, speeding, and failure to yield to pedestrians

Student Safety Education & Volunteer Support

RBUSD is providing safe routes to school education to all students in all elementary schools. We will also continue to partner with the Redondo Beach Police Department in training students on the safe use of e-bikes in our community. Additionally, the Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) and the Redondo Beach Parent Teacher Association (PTA) are considering opportunities to develop a volunteer walking school bus at each elementary school.

No. The City evaluated each location individually and, where appropriate, is implementing additional traffic safety improvements designed to support safe pedestrian travel.

The City will continue monitoring intersections throughout the school year. Traffic conditions and safety data will be reviewed regularly, and adjustments may be made as needed.

Using designated crosswalks
Obeying all traffic laws
Avoiding distractions while walking or driving
Talking with children about safe walking practices
Modeling safe behavior around schools
