E-Bike Certification

In response to the growing popularity of e-bikes among students and the rising safety concerns in the community, Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) launched a comprehensive E-Bike Safety Program in September 2025. This initiative is designed to enhance road and campus safety for all students, pedestrians, and motorists.

Certification Requirement

To ensure responsible e-bike use, all students who wish to ride e-bikes to and from school must complete a district-approved e-bike safety education program. Certification is mandatory and must be submitted to your school site’s administration before students are permitted to bring e-bikes on campus.

Approved training options include:

  • Pedal Ace
  • E-Bike Sense
  • RBPD Bike Rodeos – Hands-on safety courses provided by the Redondo Beach Police Department, with dates and registration promoted via RBPD communication channels.

If you would like another program to be considered, you must obtain approval in advance from your school site administrator.

Summer 2025 Certification Sessions (RBPD)

The Redondo Beach Police Department, in partnership with RBUSD, is offering 6 free three-hour e-bike safety courses (1.5 hours classroom + 1.5 hours hands-on) at the RBPD Annex (PCH & Vincent) from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Each session is limited to 50 students and includes mobile bike repair services:

  • July 16 – Grades 4-5
  • July 17 – Grades 6-8
  • July 18 – Grades 9-12
  • August 12 – Grades 4-5
  • August 13 – Grades 6-8
  • August 14 – Grades 9-12

Only students who are not already certified need to enroll. Once certified, a student's status remains valid for their entire time within RBUSD.

Program Success

In the 2024-25 school year, nearly 1,000 students in grades 6–12 were certified through Pedal Ace or E-Bike Sense. As a result, RBPD has observed fewer infractions and increased helmet use. We thank the RBUSD PTA Council and the Redondo Beach Educational Foundation for their support in this initiative.

Parental Responsibilities & Support

Parents and guardians play a critical role in ensuring safe and lawful e-bike use. Please:

  • Understand e-bike classifications:
    • Class 1: Pedal-assisted (20 mph max)
    • Class 2: Throttle-assisted (20 mph max)
    • Class 3: Pedal-assisted (28 mph max, 16+ only)
  • Teach and enforce helmet use and road safety.
  • Monitor riding behavior and maintain the e-bike in good condition.

Stickers & Campus Access

  • Certified students will receive a registration sticker for their e-bike.
  • Stickers are linked to student ID numbers.
  • Stickers are required to bring e-bikes on campus. Regular bikes and scooters are excluded.
  • Stickers may be revoked for rule violations or infractions.
  • Lost stickers can be replaced with documentation (e.g., police report).

Rules & Enforcement

  • E-bikes without a valid sticker will not be permitted on campus and may be confiscated or held for parent pick-up.
  • Students riding without helmets may face disciplinary actions, including the loss of campus parking privileges.
  • Unauthorized locks may be cut, with bikes securely stored until parent retrieval.

Other Notes

  • Parents riding e-bikes do not need to be certified to park on campus.
  • Violations may result in additional training, revoked privileges, or referral to community diversion programs.
  • At this time, RBUSD does not offer elementary-level certification during the school year. However, summer sessions have opened for grades 4–5.
