E-Bike Certification
As the use of e-bikes continues to grow among students, our school district remains committed to ensuring the safety of all riders, pedestrians, and motorists. To support this effort, we are implementing a requirement for students who wish to bring e-bikes to school.
All students must complete an approved e-bike safety education program before they are permitted to ride their e-bikes to and from school. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring their children complete this training through a pre-approved program, such as Pedal Ace or E-Bike Sense. Additionally, students may also obtain training and certification through the RBPD bike rodeos, which provide hands-on safety instruction. RBPD schedules for these are promoted through their communication channels. Additionally, if you have a program that you would like to have considered as an approved program you must have that program approved by your school's site administrator.
During the 2024-25 school year, our district’s e-bike certification program successfully trained nearly 1,000 students in grades 6-12 through Pedal Ace or E-Bike Sense. We are proud of this effort and encourage all students who have not yet been certified to take advantage of these safety programs.
Once a student successfully completes a program, they will receive a certification, which must be submitted to their school site’s administration before they are allowed to bring their e-bike on campus. Our goal is to create a safer school environment and ensure that all students understand the importance of responsible e-bike use.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to student safety.
- Understand e-bike classifications and ensure appropriate use
- Class 1: Pedal-assisted (20 mph max).
- Class 2: Throttle-assisted (20 mph max).
- Class 3: Pedal-assisted (28 mph max, 16+ years).
- Ensure safety by teaching road rules, monitoring riding skills, maintaining the e-bike, and enforcing helmet use.
- Only e-bikes need stickers; regular bikes and e-scooters are excluded.
- Stickers are issued upon certification and linked to the student via identification numbers.
- Stickers can be revoked for rule violations or citations.
- Replacement stickers are available with proof of loss (e.g., police report).
- E-bikes without stickers are not allowed on campus; violators may face confiscation or parent pick-up.
- Students riding to or from school without a helmet are subject to disciplinary action, which may include elimination of the privilege of parking their e-bike on campus
- Locks on unauthorized bikes may be cut, with bikes stored securely until collected by parents.
- Current sessions are limited to middle and high school students, with no elementary programs planned.
- Parents may independently at their own cost, register their children for PedalAce or E-Bike Sense courses.
- Parents riding e-bikes do not need registration or certification to park on campus.
- Violations may result in revoked stickers, additional courses, or community diversion programs.
