E-Bike Certification
RBUSD launched an E-Bike Safety Program in September 2025 to improve road and campus safety amid rising e-bike usage in Redondo Beach. Students riding e-bikes and wishing to park on campus must complete certification through approved courses offered by PedalAce or E-Bike Sense.
Certification Process
- After completing the course, students receive an RBUSD-registered sticker for campus parking.
- Students can enroll in District-sponsored E-Bike Sense courses (space permitting) or take private classes through PedalAce or E-Bike Sense.
- Proof of private course certification can be submitted to the school for sticker issuance.
Requirements
- E-Bike Sense classes require students to bring a street-legal e-bike and helmet.
Additional Resource
- A free California Highway Patrol safety course is available for general orientation, though it does not meet sticker requirements.
RBUSD encourages community collaboration to ensure safe and responsible e-bike use. Further updates on the initiative will follow.
- Who can participate: Students in grades 6-12 who complete certification with PedalAce or E-Bike Sense.
- Training details:
- E-Bike Sense: Two hours (1-hour classroom + 1-hour hands-on practice).
- PedalAce: Approximately two hours, online.
- Certification applies to one e-bike per student and is valid while enrolled in RBUSD.
Parental Support
- Understand e-bike classifications and ensure appropriate use
- Class 1: Pedal-assisted (20 mph max).
- Class 2: Throttle-assisted (20 mph max).
- Class 3: Pedal-assisted (28 mph max, 16+ years).
- Ensure safety by teaching road rules, monitoring riding skills, maintaining the e-bike, and enforcing helmet use.
Program Details
- Only e-bikes need stickers; regular bikes and e-scooters are excluded.\
- Stickers are issued upon certification and linked to the student via identification numbers.
- Stickers can be revoked for rule violations or citations.
- Replacement stickers are available with proof of loss (e.g., police report).
Enforcement & Rules
- E-bikes without stickers are not allowed on campus; violators may face confiscation or parent pick-up.
- Locks on unauthorized bikes may be cut, with bikes stored securely until collected by parents.
Availability
- Current sessions are limited to middle and high school students, with no elementary programs planned.
- Parents may independently at their own cost, register their children for PedalAce or E-Bike Sense courses.
Additional Information
- Parents riding e-bikes do not need registration or certification to park on campus.
- Violations may result in revoked stickers, additional courses, or community diversion programs.
