Custodian of Student Records
Student Services is responsible for maintaining records of students once they leave the Redondo Beach Unified School District. The Assistant Superintendent is the Official Custodian of all records. While attending Redondo schools, students' records can be found at the school they are attending. Students who move or graduate, and need copies of their records, should first contact the school they attended and request the information needed. This office will assist in providing any school documents. Any legal matters that involve student records should be directed to the Student Services Office.

Safety
Student Services provides support to schools regarding the development of the Comprehensive School Safety Plan and Emergency Response Plan. The Student Services Department organizes and schedules the District Safety Committee meetings.
Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE)
Redondo Beach Unified School District qualifies for two Tobacco Use Prevention grants. The grants provide programs for 4-8th grade students and a 6-8th grade students. The basis for the programs and the services provided are based on information gathered from the Healthy Kids Survey given in grades 4, 7, 9 and 11.
Safe and Drug Free Schools Curriculum (SDFSC)
Student Services oversees the Safe and Drug Free Schools Curriculum Grant. Our coordinator, Cindy Foster, provides support in the areas identified in the Healthy Kids Survey that is given on alternate years. This program works closely with our district adopted Character Counts program. It provides training that will help keep students safe.
Permits (Inter and Intra District)
Redondo Unified School District's first commitment is to provide a quality education for students living within Redondo's attendance boundaries. If a student that lives outside those attendance boundaries desires to attend Redondo schools, they must first obtain permission (Interdistrict Permit) from the district in which they live. That permit is then sent to the Student Services Office and evaluated. Parents are contacted by phone if a space becomes available in our schools. Each school will interview the student to see if attendance at that school is possible. Obtaining a permit from the school district in which you reside does not mandate acceptance by the Redondo Beach Unified School District.
Interdistrict permits are also necessary for Redondo Beach residents who are requesting to have their child attend a school ouside of Redondo Beach Unified School District. Information regarding interdistrict permits is available in Board Policy/Administrative Regulation 5117. For Board Policy/Administrative Regulation 5117, click here. For an Interdistrict Permit form, click here.
Intra-district Permits (permits between schools within the Redondo Beach Unified School District) originate at your neighborhood school. The neighborhood school is determined by where you reside in the District. The neighborhood school must give permission to leave their school and the school you are requesting must be willing to accept the student. Acceptance is based on the extenuating situation, space availability and the individual student's records. Intra-district Permits are basically a contract between school principals. This permit is for one year only. For an Intra-District Form, click here
School of Choice
School of Choice starts March 1st and goes through March 31st. During this time, students who live within the attendance area of the Redondo Beach Unified School District can request attendance in a school other than their neighborhood school. This process provides an opportunity for parents to change schools if they desire and there is space available. Applications must be obtained from your neighborhood school, completed, and returned to the district office within the month of March. Action is taken on the applications by the end of June, and requests are based on space available at the school being requested. If there are requests for a school that does not have space, a lottery is held to determine the order in which students will be placed as space becomes available. Once a student is accepted at the requested school, that school becomes their "neighborhood school" and no further requests are required.
Residency Verification
Redondo Beach Unified School District is obligated to provide an education for those students who reside within its attendance boundaries. From time to time, a student's residency is researched because of continued lateness, returned mail, excessive absence or statements from students indicating they live outside of Redondo Beach. Based on these issues, the District will have an employee visit the residence to verify that the student in question lives there. A report is made as to the findings and that report is forwarded to the individual schools.
Suspension/Expulsion
Redondo Beach Unified School District students are disciplined by the use of detention, suspension and expulsion. Student Services processes suspension and expulsion while detention is totally an individual school function. At the beginning of each year all students are made aware of the discipline rules and the consequences for not following them. Suspension is utilized for semi-serious to serious violations while expulsion removes a student from the school district. Suspension can be from 1-5 days and may be held at the school (in house) or the student may be sent home. A parent conference must be held with the school administration before a student returns to school.
SARB
The School Attendance Review Board (SARB) supports the individual schools by involving families in attempting to resolve students' attendance problems. Our consultant is directly connected to the district attorneys office and can schedule hearings regarding truancy/ poor behavior in school. Meetings are held twice a month at the Beach Cities Health District. Individual cases are heard by a panel of professionals that include police, psychologists, psychiatrists, a district attorney representative and school staff.
Primary Contact for all Complaints
It is the District's policy to first attempt resolution of problem by the people closest to the issue. Parents and students are encouraged to try and resolve problems at the schools. Key players would be the school staff. If a problem cannot be solved at the school level students and parents may contact the Student Services Office for assistance in resolving the particular problem or issue. Most problems are resolved at the school level, but occasionally Student Services becomes involved.
All formal complaints are initiated in the Student Services Office. Once the complaint is identified it is then directed, by Student Services, to the specific assistant superintendent under whose responsibility the issue falls. The formal complaint must be in writing.
