Welcome to our newly updated web page!

The Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) provides a continuum of supports to students with disabilities who reside within the boundaries of Redondo Beach.  We partner with various other local districts as well as with the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE).  RBUSD is a member of the Southwest Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).  The information on this site is intended to provide parents and providers access to staff information and resources.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any difficulty navigating our site.

Sincerely,

Aaron Benton

Executive Director

ELIGIBILITY

Students become eligible for Special Education services through a formalized process of evaluation.  Anyone who suspects that a student is disabled and in need of special education services, may make a formal written request. Requests will receive a response within 15 days of the district’s receipt of the request.  If recommended, assessments will take place within 60 days of a signed Assessment Plan.

Once a student has been assessed, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is held to determine a student’s eligibility for services.  Students may be found eligible in one of 13 categories per the California Education Code.

  1. Autism

PARENT INFORMATION

If a student is struggling in school and has not been identified as student with a disability, a Student Success Team meeting may be held to determine appropriate action. Team members, including the student’s parent, will discuss specific interventions that may be help the student to succeed without the need for special education. The SST members may also determine that appropriate action is formal assessment for special education.

THE LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT

At the IEP team meeting, the team will review current assessment information, propose goals for the student, and make recommendations for placement and services.  Most of the time, placement is within the general education setting with special education supports.  Occasionally, a more restrictive environment is necessary.  The team considers the continuum of options as explained the this attachment:

CALENDAR

SECTION 504

Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act provides that students with disabilities or those considered to have a disability that significantly affects a major life function may be provided accommodations under what is called a "504 Plan."

THE SOUTHWEST SELPA

SELPA and Community Advisory Committees (CAC)  - SELPA stands for Special Education Local Plan Area.  SELPAs are made up of school districts and county offices of education within particular geographic areas. Each SELPA develops a local plan describing how it will provide special education services.  SELPAs also support Community Advisory Committees (CAC).  The CAC is made up of school administrators, staff members, SELPA parents and others concerned about educating children with special needs.  The SELPA produces our Parent Rights  booklet below.  Our SELPA is remarkable in the amount and quality of training it provides for staff at all levels.

SERVICES

Students may receive any combination of services, based upon their unique needs as outlined in their IEP, including: Speech and Language, Learning Center or Resource Specialist Support, Special Day Classes, Adaptive Physical Education, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling Support, Behavioral Support and other services.

PRIVATE SCHOOL

Redondo Beach USD works under a Private School Memo of Understanding with other districts in the area.  This agreement explains roles for each district when it comes to assessing and serving students who attend private school in Redondo Beach or who live in Redondo Beach and attend private school outside of Redondo Beach.  Generally, the district in which the private school is located is responsible for assessment and to conduct an IEP to review eligibility.  If the student is eligible, the district in which the student resides will make an offer of placement and services.  If the parent chooses to decline the offer, a private school service plan will be developed by the district in which the private school is located.

INDEPENDENT EDUCATIONAL EVALUATIONS

Pursuant to the Parents' Rights and Procedural Safeguards, when there is a disagreement with the district's assessment, parents may request an independent educational evaluation.  The attached document explains the procedures to follow in this process.
