Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Which school should my child attend?

Answer: Assigned neighborhood attendance areas are determined by street name and number. About 90 percent of our students attend their neighborhood school. We do have an open enrollment policy that allows students to apply to attend a school other than their assigned school if there is space available.

Question: What documents do I need to enroll?

Answer: Birth certificate, immunization records, 2 utility bills.

Question: What are school starting and ending times?

Answer: A copy of the bell schedule may be picked up at the school office or you may call the school.

Question: Can I enroll in a school other than my assigned school?

Answer: All elementary schools offer the same outstanding educational programs. However, certain sites may provide something different that you may prefer for your child. The District’s Open Enrollment Policy allows attendance at a school other than your neighborhood site. The Open Enrollment (School of Choice) period is during the month of March. Registration is based on available space. If you are interested in having your child attend another Redondo Beach school, please contact the principal of your local site.   Annually, the District will determine the number of open spaces available at each site. Available spaces, if needed, will be selected by lottery. The lottery will be held on a date designated by the District following the open enrollment period in March.

Question: Does Redondo Beach Unified have specific attendance boundaries for each school?

Answer: Yes. The District believes in the neighborhood school concept. Each school has defined attendance boundaries in order to ensure there is enough room for the students living in the area where the school is located.

Question: How long is the student instructional day?

Answer: The District has established instructional time allotments for each grade based on parameters set by the state. The student school year is 180 days. Actual instructional hours, per week, for the different grade levels are:

  • Kindergarten 16.7 hours
  • Grades 1 and 2 23.8 hours
  • Grades 3 through 6 25.4 hours
  • Grades 7 and 8 27.7 hours
  • Grades 9 through 12 28.4 hours

Schedules for each site, including recess and lunch periods, are determined by the individual schools.

Question: How do I obtain my student transcripts?

Answer: You may obtain a copy of your child’s report card or transcript by contacting the school directly.
